Do you know which literature laureate didn’t drink coffee?
The Irish playwright, author, critic and socialist George Bernard Shaw considered eating to be a “troublesome necessity.” He famously avoided meat, alcohol, smoking, tea and coffee.
Despite his low caffeine consumption, Shaw had ample energy, penning more than 60 plays including ‘Pygmalion’ in his lifetime as well as working as a journalist. In 1939, Shaw won an Oscar for his role in adapting ‘Pygmalion’ for the screen – one of only two laureates to have been awarded the famous golden trophy. (The other is Bob Dylan.)
