The Supreme Court has ruled that a person who professes a religion other than Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism cannot be recognised as a member of a Scheduled Caste.

A bench of Justices P. K. Mishra and N. V. Anjaria ruled that conversion to any other religion results in the loss of Scheduled Caste status.

The Supreme Court upheld the earlier decision of the Andhra Pradesh High Court which held that individuals who convert to Christianity and actively profess it cannot retain their Scheduled Caste (SC) status.
