@Conroy_Andrew1 Like you mentioned, I think there is an underlying theme of unity here. Looking at the other works of Castel I wonder if the hands could also be representative of different generations, support, and change in relation to the caption as well.
@Georgia22006 I really enjoyed looking at the works of Njideka Akunyili. The “portals” added a very unique aspect to her works. I think it is also interesting how she is able to tie her Nigerian and American roots together through her art.
@i_bSinoB@DevanShimoyama I agree! I always appreciate the attention to detail given to the background vs the foreground. I feel like you don’t see that very often.
@ZoeWerner356 As you mentioned, they confederate may be burned and tattered, but it is always connected to the US flag. I think this was somewhat risky but also necessary piece considering the recent attempts to “erase” history and move past the ugly parts of the United States foundation.
@mortuarixart@DevanShimoyama I really enjoy the work of Devan Shimoyama because of his bold color palette. That combined with his positioning of the figures in the foreground and the background make the pieces extremely eye-catching.
It was interesting to see how the struggles of black people were represented in a way that wasn’t necessarily dark. Mickalene used lots of color. #arth287
I found ringgolds expression of violence to be very important but it was also very direct and almost harsh. In reality this was a depiction of human nature and the ability to do whatever it takes to have what you want. #arth287
I found Senga’s medium use interesting. It even shows that nothing is really unusable. Using pantyhose was extremely originally and a great way to express nerve damage. #ARTH287
@ZoeWerner356 I really like your take on this, especially the idea that he may not have been the first to hang there. That is something I did not catch on to at first glance.
#arth287artoninsta I found these pieces by Sable Elyse Smith interesting because it expresses that idea that everyone, regardless of their race or roles contribute to judgement and maybe even destroying things and each other through it.(the flames)
This piece by Jordan Casteel reminds me of spring/ spring break because of the use of bright and vivid colors. The flowers that are seen at the bottom also portray this idea. #arth287artoninsta
Hughes expresses the concept of African Americans “dumbing down” their blackness. This came from a place of shame, and a perspective pushed by whites that being black was negative. #ARTH287
In the past white media used it’s power as a means a further justify their racist views. Ethnic Notions expressed where many of these blacks stereotypes came from. #arth287
I really appreciate this piece by Stanford Biggers as it displays the irony on the view of black women. We are trapped in the worlds negative viewpoint of inherit blackness and being women but also on display as some sort of trophy. #arth287artoninsta
I like how Meta Warrick Fullers sculpture of Mary Turner emphasizes resilience. The sculpture doesn’t depict her as just a victim but as someone that could overcome obstacles. #arth287
This piece was a part of a social exhibition in New York by Devan Shimoyama. I found this piece interesting because as of recently the hoodie has become a symbol of black youth unfortunately in various cities following the Trayvon Martin events. #arth287artoninsta
#ARTH287ArtonInsta Looking at these side by side their connotations are opposite of what is stereotypical. ie. depicting a person but not explicitly and person of color doing “hard labor”.
I appreciate how Duncanson’s work seems somewhat simple but represents a more complex idea. The symbolize in the piece allows the viewer to make connects to anti-slavery and racial tensions #ARTH287
#ARTH287ArtonInsta I chose this piece because I find the representation of time here really interesting. The subject is seen holding an older image of himself and also if you look in the background a past portrait painted by casteel of the individual is on the refrigerator.
