Recommended read from @PanteraCapital by @0xfishylosopher on the return of HTTP 402.

Accepting crypto isn’t the goal, it’s the gateway to agent readiness. Once money is programmable, intelligent systems can transact. This is the lens behind #h402

If agents see our finances and routines, no single vendor should control the money. We’re building 402Pay: agent wallets, programmable spend policies and verifiable execution receipts. Co-own your AI, as our @lia_aixyz states.

"An AI agent is one of the most intimate experiences we will have. Without decentralized architecture, we're building an Orwellian future with zero privacy."

- @lia_aixyz from @BitGPTnetwork on why co-owning AI is the only solution.

Great thread, @Ryan__Barney @0xfishylosopher. The web wanted a pay button; we gave it an agent.

With #h402 your agent speaks plain HTTP, ships receipts, respects budgets, and merchants go live fast.

Open, chain-agnostic, fridge-ready 🤣.

How can you buy a fridge with an AI agent?

With @Ryan__Barney, I trace the history of "HTTP 402 - Payment Required": its lost promise as the Internet's payment code, its revival in the era of agentic payments by @Coinbase's x402, @BitGPTnetwork h402, and @radiustech_xyz EVMAuth, and how this allows end consumers to buy fridges with AI agents + stablecoins.

A TLDR:
- HTTP 402’s lost promise: Originally envisioned as a native micropayment standard with a <payment> tag, HTTP 402 never took off due to a lack of digital cash and economic feasibility, leaving it a dormant relic of early web design.

- FinTech “walled gardens” and the Internet’s Original Sin: Instead of protocol-level payments, centralized processors like PayPal and Stripe filled the gap, locking users into proprietary ecosystems and cementing the ad-driven business model of the web, dubbed as the Internet’s “Original Sin”

- Stablecoins + AI agents revive the ‘90s vision: With stablecoins offering near-instant, low-cost, programmable transactions, and AI agents acting as autonomous buyers, HTTP 402’s original dream of seamless, machine-to-machine payments is becoming viable.

- Current competing standards: x402, h402, and EVMAuth take different approaches to payment challenges, facilitators, and proofs of payment, balancing ease of integration, multichain support, and smart contract composability.

- Infrastructure Opportunities: Widespread HTTP 402 use will depend on (1) client/agent integration, (2) vendor adoption, (3) facilitator systems, and (4) advances in stablecoin payment infrastructure. Of these, facilitator systems, which control asset flow and spending policy, is likely to be the most lucrative infrastructure opportunity, while vendor adoption (what agents can actually buy) are likely HTTP 402’s biggest hurdle.

If you're a builder building on x402/h402/EVMAuth or any other protocol for agentic payments, please reach out via DMs! More than happy to chat :)

#402pay is now live. It is a non-custodial, borderless, agent-native payment layer that settles with a single cryptographic signature and integrates cleanly via standard APIs, webhooks, and hosted checkout for global reach. 🚀

7/ The Next Steps

We welcome feedback after a test payment with these focus areas: additional chains, plugins, reporting, off-ramps, and agent triggers.

@SunOnChain @crossmint @coinbase @baseapp This demo is 🔥 , onchain checkout starting to feel like magic. That’s the same spirit we built https://t.co/K9EABl1ZgI around: keep the 402 handshake, but make it chain-plural and governance-neutral.
