The iconic arrow sequence was actually filmed using real arrows. In other words, the arrows striking the wooden boards were not created with special effects, but carefully staged with skilled archers.
Toshirō Mifune moves his arms to deflect the arrows embedded in the wood, subtly pointing at the direction he intended to move to.
