History Repeats: Jihadist Genocide in Syria and the West’s Willful Blindness
In 1571, the Ottoman forces of Sultan Selim II laid siege to Famagusta, the last Venetian stronghold on Cyprus. After a brutal year-long siege, the Venetian defenders surrendered under the promise of safe passage from Ottoman commander Lala Mustafa Pasha.
That promise was a lie. Once inside, the Ottomans butchered nearly everyone in the city, sparing only its commander, Marcantonio Bragadin—but only for a more gruesome fate. They sliced off his ears and nose, humiliated and tortured him for two weeks, then skinned him alive. His stuffed skin was hoisted onto an Ottoman ship and delivered to the Sultan as a trophy of conquest.
History teaches us a lesson. The jihadists of the past gave no quarter, and neither do the jihadists of today. Their goal is not coexistence. It is not compromise. It is domination.
Syria: A New Famagusta in the Making
Today, history repeats itself in Syria. The Islamic terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an offshoot of Al-Qaeda, now rules large portions of the country. They claim to have severed ties with Al-Qaeda, but that was nothing more than a deception for Western audiences. Their ideology, their brutality, their mission—none of it has changed.
HTS’s leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, parades before cameras in a suit rather than jihadist robes. Another lie. He fought American forces in Iraq and shares the same vision of global conquest that Bin Laden did. He is no different than the Ottoman commanders who led massacres in centuries past.
Over the past week, HTS militants have executed as many as 4,000 people. Their victims include Christians—Greek Orthodox, Syriac Orthodox, Maronite Catholics—and Alawites, a Shi’a Muslim minority that has long coexisted with Christians in Syria. These communities are being exterminated, their men lined up and shot, their women and children slaughtered. This is not war. This is genocide.
The Return of the Ottoman Nightmare
Meanwhile, Turkey, the modern successor to the Ottoman Empire, is waging its own war in Syria. President Erdogan’s military, with air support, is attacking Kurdish forces in the northeast, carving out Syrian land to annex into Turkey. The goal? The complete eradication of the Kurds. Erdogan dreams of restoring the Ottoman Empire, and he pursues that dream with blood and fire.
The Biden administration had tried everything to convince Americans that the threat of Islamic extremism is over. That we can move on. But nothing has changed—except our willful blindness to the growing storm. The jihadists of today, like those who overran Famagusta centuries ago, still offer the same choice: convert or die.
History is repeating. Those who do not learn its lessons will suffer its consequences.
The rest of the story:
David Herold was one of the conspirators involved in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. He played a key role in assisting John Wilkes Booth after Booth shot Lincoln on April 14, 1865. Herold, who was a young pharmacist, helped Booth escape from Washington, D.C., by guiding him through the woods to the Maryland countryside. The two sought refuge in a nearby farmhouse, where they were eventually surrounded by Union soldiers.
Herold was captured alongside Booth on April 26, 1865, and later tried for his involvement in the conspiracy. He was convicted of conspiracy to assassinate the president and sentenced to death. On July 7, 1865, David Herold was hanged along with three other conspirators, including Lewis Powell, George Atzerodt, and Mary Surratt (the first woman to be executed by the U.S. government). His execution marked the end of the formal legal actions taken against those involved in Lincoln's assassination.
Merchants used giant product recreations, like the tea kettle at the Oriental Tea Company, as a way to grab attention and clearly signal what their business was about. It was an effective visual branding strategy to make storefronts stand out and be easily recognized.
