The amount of Gen Z students who say they are "confident" in their tech skills but then can't figure out how to export a document as a PDF is really concerning.
This. So much this. I dare say this could apply to universities as well. We literally don't have enough people on staff to serve our pre-pandemic student load at pre-pandemic levels. But yet, here we are!
... to add to that, the fact that the BoT and senior leadership are not FREAKING OUT and panicking to try to keep current employees is indicative of the problem. They haven't caught on yet that most folks here are no longer easily replaceable.
We have so many open positions. No applicants. Senior ldrshp is confused about why we aren't attracting anyone. Bro dogs, it is because the rest of the world has moved on - higher pay, flexibility, remote work, etc are the norm now. HiEd is not offering attractive jobs in 2022.
Dear students: It's summer... so I'm only operating at like... 30% mental capacity most days. The other 70% of my brain wants to be anywhere but in the office. So yeah, I'll be a bit slower responding to emails than usual. Sorry in advance π«₯
@Brian_Matthew88 Right? Want an easy out because you cant figure out how to do forgiveness without pissing everyone off? Kill the interest, permanently. And apply past interest payments to principal. Blam. Done.
Professors: How do you usually handle tipping in your classes? I write my venmo up on the board the first day so students can express their appreciation for an especially well-delivered lecture. Other ideas worked better for you?
ummm so @AERA_EdResearch just told me I need to register & pay for my 11 yr old CHILD to attend #aera22 as my 'guest'. He doesn't need to be in childcare & he isn't attending the conference. He is going to play on his ipad in back of room while i present... wtf?
@kylennium29 @MineEyesDazzle @kevinrmcclure Yup. The whole "family" thing is often a way for upper admin to justify low wages and unreasonable workloads because we are "doing it for the students".
Dear university president: I get how higher ed finance works & that $ for capital projects isnt the same as $ for staff. But when, IN THE SAME EMAIL, you say "things are tight and theres no room for salary increases this year, also we're building a $32mil building" it sucks π€¬
@codyhowell As a student affairs person who recently has been moved under a non-student-affairs VP, I get this question often. From my boss. Who keeps gently reminding me that I shouldn't get so sucked into all this student stuff. It's great.
@ValerieHeruska 2009ish: 27k+housing
2011ish: 36k
2014ish: 56k
2019ish: 65k
Now with about 15 years of experience and an advanced degree I make almost as much as an entry level corporate finance or data analyst π€ͺ
@lovedoveclarke @LaurRoarrr If you reads enough history, it kind of seems like life actually used to be MORE horrific than now. There just wasnβt high definition Tik Toks of the time Ghengis Kahn slaughtered an entire city.
My institution is undergoing re-accredidation and everyone is LOSING THEIR MINDS with panic. I can't tell if this is just a normal reaction, or if we are like that kid who has a book report due tomorrow but hasn't read the book yet and is just now realizing how screwed they are.
Dear students: I appreciate you asking me what my plans are for spring break because you think I get a spring break. But I never know how to answer other than saying βhaha, Iβll be hereβ¦ working onβ¦ something, I guessβ¦β
