@BritainPodcast@KingsRussia@ruth_deyermond You really need to go back to the early 1990s and 2000s to see the seeds of all that has happened. It is too glib to simply take this from the 2010s. We were disdainful early on and did not truly invest, although we did invest in helping to stabilise their nuclear arsenal.
@ChrisO_wiki Remembering the ‘rouble-rupee’ route from the 1980s when India paid for their military equipment and created a rupee mountain in Moscow, that the Soviets were at pains to know how to spend. Not $.
@AsherGrisanti@rac112apilas Every Behicle Registration Number VRN against the type of vehicle had meaning to the intelligence people. Our job was to collect. Rammings were normal 🤓
@TimesRadio Analysts analyse. They have limited experience in many ways, including so called specialists. Dealing with now requires experience and understanding. Too late for blame game; time to stand up and deal with matters.
@agbdrilling@RDPHistory Remember it well. The first Phantom to arrive, after a long flight from Ascension , flew along the runway at x feet and then simply went vertical. It was a good day, following much Sapper effort the previous months.
@AtlasPulse@21Shares@ByteTree Brilliant. A man who stands tall in adversity. A man who shares his honesty and knowledge. A man whose time has come. A good man. 😎
@RoyalAirForce@RAFBenson I think his name was Flt Lt Lex Brown driving. My Sapper Troop, we all looked up to him. He was the Great Redeemer as he lifted off an old Low Frequency antenna for communicating with our submarines bit by bit from Dungiven, Northern Ireland. 1977/8. I have a picture somewhere
The grand bargain is between Russia and US. That was the only reason (otherwise why do we have it) for the UK ‘independent’ nuclear deterrent, except that it depends on the Americans. The French Force de Frappe may be the last European lever in absolute extremis.
@implausibleblog The Army defends the homeland and provides expeditionary on an ad hoc basis. Let’s obsess about Dark Blue and Light Blue. I have always obsessed about why we took our eye off Russia from 1991. European allies provide ground troops because they already do and are better at it.
@implausibleblog Let’s get a grip. UK must commit 100% to Europe. No more Submarines in Australia, no more aircraft carriers out East. Our new reality is here in our back garden. Our Navy and Airforce on the edge of Europe are what we can give to Europe strategically, and fully committed.
@IntercityFC@BenWallace70 Come on. What has been the point of our so-called independent nuclear deterrent if not to make sure the US and Russia/Soviet Union never did a deal over Europe? It turns out now that firstly it was not credible, and secondly it had never been truly independent.
@BBCSteveR Russia only wamts to negotiate at the top table, and that is the US. But with the US, not Ukraine supported by the US. So Trump is the man, and they will back off. If they can have a deal that firms land access to Crimea, and can show victory to their people then it will happen.
@BritainPodcast@KingsRussia@ruth_deyermond Sure, makes me history too. But I was witness during that time and the 2000s and 2010s and bemoaned the lack of effort on the West’s part. The crucial thing is to agree what winning means from our part, and put resources behind achieving that. We have so far failed to do that.

@bbcideas One of the most powerful things in living with dying, is how they can bind families together at such an important time for everyone. They are like teachers and it can be such a privilege to be part of such an intimate time for everyone.
