This despite clear uncertainty (even among the authors) about the origin. You can try to soft sell it all you want, but it was purposeful obfuscation.

Statistically, the greatest risk of injury accidents stems from motorists backing out of parking spaces and striking pedestrians using the drive aisles behind them. Back in parking greatly reduces that risk. Granted, with modern cars that have backup cameras, alerts, etc. the risk is less than it used to be. But it's still the highest risk maneuver. I don't begrudge people who choose to back in.

@DrPhiltill Yes, the point is that there is a vast amount of open space in the western US that sits undeveloped because of the challenges with getting water, transportation, and utilities to those locations. But those challenges pale in comparison to bringing those things to the moon.
