They failed her because they misidentified the abuser and completely mishandled the situation.

The 911 caller reported #BrianLaundrie was seen slapping Gabby—yet when officers arrived, they focused on Gabby as the primary aggressor instead (because Brian had some scratches) while she has bruises on her body as well) of recognizing the classic signs of a #domesticviolence victim. She was crying, apologizing, taking the blame—all while Brian was calm, laughing, and deflecting. That’s manipulation 101.

Law enforcement should have recognized the red flags. Instead, they separated them for the night—but without ensuring Gabby had real safety. Saying “she was given the van” ignores the reality of how abusive relationships work. Victims don’t always recognize their own danger. They are manipulated into believing they’re the problem.

Gabby didn’t “choose” to go back—she was trapped in a cycle of abuse. A cycle Moab officers failed to break. And days later, she was gone.

This isn’t about hindsight. This is about recognizing why victims don’t leave and why they need real intervention—before it’s too late.
