2010 I bought the NDA form, wrote the exams, and I wrote very well, but one thing struck me.

Before I went into the exam hall, I and my mum went into a senior officer’s office and he asked this question

“Who recommended you” when my mum answered no one, his face changed, he became weak, he wished he could help, but he couldn’t.

After writing the exams, the names came out, I wasn’t surprised that my name wasn’t there.

2010 when the military was interesting to join, you guys used tribalism and godfatherism to recruit.
Now that there’s nothing left in there, you guys are pleading for youths to pick up the forms.

中国用了20年，才把乌克兰军工技术给吃透了，军事因此突飞猛进，可唯独留下了一大遗憾！不夸张的说，中国军事能发展到现在，乌克兰的帮助可真不小，那这个遗憾到底是啥呢？

咱们中国军工能有今天的底子，乌克兰当年的帮助，真不能不提。

苏联解体之后，乌克兰手里攥着一大笔苏联留下来的军工家底，工厂、图纸、老专家全都在。那时候乌克兰缺钱，咱们缺技术，两边一拍即合，前后长达二十年的技术合作，就此拉开。

当年中方人员往返中乌两地，跑遍乌克兰尼古拉耶夫造船厂、曙光机械设计局、马达西奇工厂。大批乌克兰专家跟着来到国内，扎进大连、哈尔滨、西安的研究所和车间，现场看图纸、拆设备、手把手讲解工艺。

最出名的就是瓦良格号航母。这艘半成品航母停在乌克兰船厂多年，没资金继续建造。

中方完成谈判，买下船体，连同全套设计图纸一起运回国内，技术人员对着图纸一点点测绘、拆解研究，改造船体，最后造出辽宁舰，中国航母从零实现突破。

海军动力这块，咱们引进乌克兰UGT-25000燃气轮机。国内工程师连续多年反复试验、消化图纸，攻克材料、装配难题，这套技术吃透之后，国产燃气轮机批量下线，装到052C、052D驱逐舰上，解决了主力战舰“心脏”卡脖子的难题。

舰载机方面，中方从乌克兰拿到苏33原型机T10K。技术人员拆开飞机，研究机翼折叠、起落架、舰载机特殊管路结构，靠着这份实物参考，再加上自主研发，歼15舰载机顺利试飞，配套辽宁舰形成战斗力。

教练机发动机、坦克动力、大型补给舰技术，也都是这段时间陆续引进消化。

青海湖补给舰，就是当年从乌克兰买来半成品续建完成，很长一段时间都是海军主力大型补给舰。二十年时间，一项项技术落地，很多过去卡脖子的装备难题，被逐个打通。

但这里头，留下了一个实打实的遗憾，就是图-160战略轰炸机。

苏联解体后，乌克兰分到19架图-160。这架飞机外号白天鹅，能超音速远程飞行，携带远程巡航导弹，是当年顶级的战略打击平台。中方派人对接谈判，打算引进这批飞机。

美俄两国得到消息，立刻出手阻拦。俄罗斯提出，乌克兰交出8架图-160，用来抵扣欠下的天然气债务。美国拿出经济援助作为条件，要求乌克兰销毁剩下的轰炸机，还派人到现场监督拆解。

乌克兰把8架交给俄罗斯。剩下11架，1架送进博物馆保存，其余10架，用切割机分段拆解，机身、机翼全部切成碎片。等拆解完成，中方引进图-160的路子彻底堵死，再也没有机会拿到这款战略轰炸机整机和全套系统资料。

二十年中乌军工合作，我们拿到舰船、燃气轮机、舰载机原型、教练机发动机等技术，补齐海军、空军多个短板。可图160这件事，成了这段合作里无法弥补的缺口。

引进乌克兰技术，是给咱们军工打开一扇窗户，不是拿来就能直接坐享其成。图160没能买到，看着可惜，但也倒逼我们坚持自主研发。外来技术只能当垫脚石，真正强大的国防，根基永远要握在自己手里。

Last year, I went to Lagos, Nigeria 🇳🇬, where I visited Computer Village, the largest electronics market in the country. All of the used cell phones there came from China 🇨🇳.

So on my recent trip to China, I wanted to find the source at the other end of this supply chain.

My journey in Guangzhou started in Xiaobei, known as "Little Africa", where I met Mama Alhaja and her son Toye, who were buying goods to ship home and sell in Abuja.

They told me about another place - the Shengxian Dashatou Second-Hand Trade Market, where thousands of Africans source used electronics. There, I met Ousman, a Senegalese trader living in Guangzhou.

We talk a lot about China's trade with the US. But I think China’s trade with emerging markets is one of the most important forces in the global economy, and one of the least examined. So I got on the plane to explore it for myself.
