This morning we went to the turtle hatchery where they rehabilitate injured sea turtles and turtle eggs before releasing them back into the ocean. A bit of relaxation now until our surfing lesson this afternoon.
Today we're off to the first day of our volunteering project, helping at a nursery school. We'll be playing with the children and teaching them some things this morning and in the afternoon we'll be helping to paint their school.
Yesterday afternoon we made our way to our final accommodation. On the way we stopped for lunch with Mithra and Maya from Camp Coconut and a tour around their sustainable farm. Fantastic to hear their story.
Last night we stayed at the Big Game Camp in Yala National Park. A wonderful dinner under the stars to cap off the day whilst listening to the sounds of the jungle.
Yesterday we headed to Belihuloya (stopping on the way for some baked treats). We trekked through the rice fields and villages to reach our camp site in the forest for the night
Yesterday afternoon we had our first real "down time" of the trip. After the jam packed first week we all appreciated a chance to rest. We took part in a quiz and after dinner reflected on our journey so far, sharing our trip highs, lows and what we're looking forward to.
This morning we visited the New Giragama Tea Factory to see how tea is produced before enjoying a refreshing cup of tea made in the factory. Now we are off towards Kithugala for some white water rafting.
Yesterday was a day of culture and sightseeing around Kandy. The Temple of the Tooth in the morning followed by a visit to the Botanical Gardens. In the evening we attended a cultural dance show involving a fire dance finale.
Today we climbed Mt Manigala in the Knuckles mountain range before heading to Kandy for the night. Tomorrow we visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth relic, enjoy cultural performances and visit the botanical gardens in Peradeniya.
An afternoon exploring the ancient religious city of Polonnaruwa by bicycle, a sacred religious site. On the journey back to the accommodation the students gave us their best group karaoke. Tomorrow another early start as we hike through the Knuckles mountains.
This morning we were up early to climb Sigiriya Rock (The Lion Rock) Fortress. Quick stop back at the accommodation to prepare for our afternoon tour around the ancient city of Polonnaruwa.
