On the eight year anniversary of the release of The Nice Guys, it’s worth taking a moment to remember that in 2016, Ryan Gosling completed one of the best single years of any actor in modern Hollywood when he starred in two instant classics: La La Land & The Nice Guys.
On the one hand, Gosling’s performance in La La Land might be the best of his career. As Sebastian, Gosling plays a down-on-his-luck, jazz-obsessed nobody who falls in love at the same time his career takes off. I love that Gosling actually sang in this film & I think he showed a vulnerability that so many audiences found relatable. It’s a personal favorite film of mine & a side of Gosling I didn’t know existed.
On the other hand, Gosling showed the world his brilliant comedic timing when he starred alongside Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys. Leading men as good looking as Gosling aren’t supposed to be this funny- but we learned in The Nice Guys that Gosling can do more than just dramatic roles like playing a cold-blooded killer (Drive) or a drug-addicted teacher (Half Nelson). The Nice Guys opened so many doors for Gosling’s career (like Barbie) and unlocked a new level of range in the actor’s repertoire.
2016 helped me realize how much I love Ryan Gosling. I love him for the movies he picks & the risks he takes- none of which were on display more than in 2016, especially considering this was at a time when everyone was signing up to make superhero movies. Maybe it’s weird to be nostalgic for something that happened only 8 years ago, but man, I miss 2016: The Year of Ryan Gosling.
