Cherokee CC, 1907 Donald Ross, Knoxville, TN

If there was ever a club that was “landlocked”, Cherokee CC would be the poster child for such a club. Wow, how Ross fit/routed 18 holes into this rectangular piece of property is truly amazing.

Almost all the holes run east and west along a sloped ridge that runs through the entire property with the exception of some par 3’s facing north and south. From the back tees, it only plays about 6500 yds. But due to the sever sloping of the ridge, it felt like it played plenty longer.

The greens at Cherokee were classic Ross. Most were either elevated or cut into hillsides and were plenty sloped keeping you on your toes over every putt. The ridge really played a part in how putts broke. What looked like a putt would break one way, often broke the opposite due to the ridge slope. They rolled very true and had plenty of speed.

The bunkering throughout was penal. Get into one of the fairway bunkers and you found yourself hitting out sideways. All in all the golf course was in spectacular condition - firm and fast was the theme.

I had never heard of Cherokee until last week. Why, not quite sure? But I can tell you this golf course was a complete joy to play and is a place you’d never get bored. @jlepagepga and his staff could not have been any more hospitable. I was accompanied by his assistant Seth and we just had a fabulous day. And, as I posted yday, the logo could very well be one of the best in all of golf.
