A sentence is usually about someone doing something.

The person or thing doing the action is called the subject.

The person or thing receiving the action is called the object.

Example: I kicked the ball.

The ball (Object) ✅

Another example: The teacher praised me.

Who did the praising?

The teacher (Subject) ✅

Who received the praise?

Me (Object) ✅

Look at this:

My sister and I went to the market. ✅

Me and my sister went to the market. ❌

In the example, “I” and “my sister and I” are doing the action, so they are subjects.

For OBJECT, Use “Me”.

When the action is being done to you, use “me.”

The teacher praised me. ✅

The teacher praised I. ❌

The driver took my sister and me to the market. ✅

The driver took my sister and I to the market. ❌

In this example, “me and my sister” and “me” are receiving the action, so they are objects.

Let me open your eyes to a trick:

If you’re not sure whether to use I or me, remove the other person’s name and test the sentence.

Three major things that the Nigerian government did to the Igbos after the Civil War.

1. The £20 policy.

This completely eroded their wealth and made them poorer, at the time.

2. The indigenization decree.

The Nigerian enterprise promotion decree forced foreign owned companies to sell shares to Nigerians. Hence, the Igbos could not participate in buying shares because they had become poorer due to the £20 policy.

3. The abandoned property Act.

Properties that were owned by Igbos pre-civil war that were abandoned, especially in places like Port Harcourt and Lagos, were confiscated and declared abandoned. This deprived the Igbos of real estate wealth.

56 years later, despite all that happened, the Igbos have risen to enviable heights, and the country cannot survive without them.
