People are so careless with the way they speak to others, and it bothers me. You can make a passing comment about someone’s appearance, intelligence, personality or something they’re already struggling with, laugh about it and move on with your life. Meanwhile, that person might go home and spend years battling with what you said.
And please, this thing where people use “I’m just being honest” to justify being unnecessarily mean needs to stop. There’s nothing admirable about having no filter. You can tell the truth without being cruel. You can correct someone without humiliating them. You can disagree with someone without making them feel worthless.
What makes it worse is that when people finally speak up about how your words affected them, you turn it around and make them feel stupid for being hurt. “You’re too sensitive.” “It was just a joke.” “I didn’t mean it like that.”
Okay, but you still said it.
I wish people understood that not every wound is visible, and not everybody will tell you when you’ve hurt them. Some people will laugh with you and go home carrying the weight of something you said without a second thought.
Please, be kind with your words. You never really know what somebody is already fighting within themselves, and you should not have to be the reason they start fighting something new.
You don’t have to be a particularly nice person to everybody, but at the very least, be mindful of the things you say to people. Not everything that crosses your mind needs to come out of your mouth.
