Last week in Rukungiri, I had the opportunity to speak to the thousands of people who had turned up for the free medical camp organised by @NewtonAllan6. I emphasised the importance of recognising and appreciating people who give back to their communities.

What shocked me most was that this medical camp was held in the constituency of @jkmuhwezi. Despite his more than 30 years in government, serving in some of the country's highest offices, the entire constituency does not have a single medical doctor.

The people were desperately in need of medical care. They had turned up in overwhelming numbers, many of them with serious and long-neglected health conditions. Looking at some of the cases, I couldn't help but wonder whether some of those patients would still be alive if this medical camp had not taken place.

This should concern every Ugandan. Access to basic healthcare should never depend on the goodwill of volunteers or occasional medical camps.
