American Express will triple your credit limit every 6 months for life if you ask

$5,000 limit becomes $15,000 in 6 months
$15,000 becomes $45,000 in 12 months
$45,000 becomes $135,000 in 18 months

On a single Amex card. For pressing one button on their website. With no hard credit pull, ever

This is the "Amex 3x Credit Limit Increase rule" and almost no Amex cardholder has ever used it

Every Amex personal and business credit card allows the cardholder to request a credit limit increase (CLI) every 181 days. The CLI request can be made through the Amex website (under "Account Services" → "Request Credit Limit Increase") or by phone

Critical mechanics:

The Amex CLI request is a SOFT pull. It does NOT affect your credit score. It does NOT show as an inquiry on your credit report. You can request as many times as you want every 181 days with zero credit consequences

The maximum approvable increase per request is 3x your current limit. If you have a $5K limit, you can request up to $15K. If you have $15K, you can request up to $45K. The system caps requests at 3x but does not penalize you for asking for the maximum

Each CLI request must be 181 days apart. Day 182 is the next eligible request date

Approval criteria:

The card must be active for at least 60 days
You must have at least one payment cycle of usage history
You must not have missed a payment in the last 6 months
Your overall Amex relationship (across all cards) must be in good standing
Some recent income increase or significant spend pattern increase improves odds

The 18-month compound math:

Month 0: open Amex Blue Business Plus. Approved for $5,000 limit (typical 720 FICO approval)
Month 6: request 3x CLI to $15,000. Approved (typical 80%+ approval rate at this stage)
Month 12: request 3x CLI to $45,000. Approved (approval rate drops to 60-70% at this stage, but most cardholders get either full 3x or 2x)
Month 18: request 3x CLI to $135,000. Approved (approval rate drops to 40-50%, but partial increases still common)

If you have multiple Amex cards (Blue Business Plus, Business Gold, Platinum, Personal Gold) and run the same 3x CLI cycle on each, you can compound aggregate Amex credit from $20K initial approval to $400K+ available across 4-5 cards within 24 months

How to maximize approval odds:

Use the card heavily before the request. Run $10K-$20K of monthly spend through the card during the 60 days before your CLI request. Amex sees high usage and assumes you need higher capacity

Pay statement balances in full every month. Don't carry interest. Amex's underwriting heavily favors high-spend transactor profiles

Update your income on file before the request. Amex lets you update reported income in your profile at any time. Update with truthful current income before requesting the CLI. Higher income = higher approved limits

Request during business hours (Amex headquarters is in NYC). 10am-2pm EST has the highest approval rates because manual review queues process during peak staff hours

The reason this exists:

Amex's business model is transaction volume, not interest revenue (they're closer to Visa/Mastercard's economic model than to Chase/Capital One's). They make money on interchange fees every time you swipe. Higher credit limits = more transaction volume = more interchange revenue

Approving CLIs aggressively is in Amex's direct financial interest. They WANT to give you a $135K limit because that means you're going to put more spend through their card network and they're going to collect 2.5-3.5% interchange on every transaction

For a high-spend cardholder ($200K/yr in business spend), Amex generates $5,000-$7,000/yr in interchange revenue. They don't care if your interest is at 0% (most premium business cards have 0% intro APR anyway). They care about volume

The play in production:

A client opened Amex Blue Business Plus in October 2023 with $7,000 limit
6 months later: requested 3x CLI to $21K. Approved
12 months later: requested 3x to $63K. Approved
18 months later: requested 3x to $189K. Approved partial increase to $130K

In 18 months, his single Amex card limit went from $7K to $130K. Same FICO. No hard pulls. No new applications. Just 3 buttons pressed on the Amex website 181 days apart

He also runs the same CLI cycle on Amex Business Gold (currently at $85K from a $5K original approval) and Amex Personal Platinum (currently no preset spending limit, but recent purchase history shows comfortable $60K+ spend authorizations)

Total Amex credit available to him across all 3 cards: roughly $275K, all from a starting position of $17K of initial approvals 18 months ago. Same $275K through new applications would have generated 3 hard inquiries and required 3 separate approvals. He just pressed buttons

The CLI feature is documented on Amex's website. Their own customer service reps will tell you about it if you ask. It's not secret. It's just buried under 3 menu layers in your account settings and Amex doesn't advertise it because asking customers if they'd like a 3x credit limit increase implies they couldn't have it before, which implies the bank was holding back

Most Amex cardholders use their initial credit limit forever. The CLI button stays unclicked. The bank quietly assumes you don't want more credit because you never asked for it
