Litecoin's post-mortem reveals April was the second attack. The first happened in March and stayed private for a month.

The bug: an attacker could peg out 85,000 LTC from MWEB while only "spending" an MWEB input worth 1.2 LTC. The size check existed in mempool and normal block-building paths but was skipped during block connection - so a miner including the malformed data in their own block could bypass it. Free 85K LTC inflated onto the transparent chain.

That's what happened on March 19 at block 3,073,882. Devs found it internally during code review, recovered the funds through negotiation. The actor returned everything for an 850 LTC bounty (~$170K). Charlie Lee personally bought 850 LTC to refill MWEB balance. Story stayed private.

April was attempt #2 at the same path. The March patch blocked the original exploit but had a side effect: mutated MWEB block data caused upgraded mining nodes to stall. Unupgraded miners extended the invalid chain. 13-block reorg.

Cross-chain damage during the April window:
- NEAR Intents: 11,000 LTC swapped for 7.78 BTC (~$1M+ market maker/solver loss)
- THORChain: 10 LTC swapped for 0.0072 BTC

The Litecoin team used AI-assisted code review to find additional bugs before public release. Defenders adopting the same tools attackers use is the asymmetric response.

April's earlier "51% attack" framing was wrong. It was a consensus failure: emergency patch broke mining RPC under mutated blocks, unupgraded miners extended an invalid chain.
