🚨🗣️ 𝗡𝗘𝗪: Jürgen Klopp on Tuchel's performance against Argentina:
"People always speak after the game like coaching is easy. Like you just choose attack or defend’and that’s it. It doesn’t work like this. Football is much more complex.
"I see the criticism of Tuchel for trying to defend the 1-0 against, but let me tell you something: if he didn’t do that, if he kept pushing forward and they conceded the same people would be saying, ‘Why didn’t he control the game? Why didn’t he defend the lead?’
"In knockout football, whatever decision you make, someone will criticise you. I’m not saying every decision is perfect, but you have to understand the logic behind it.
"Managing a game at that stage is never simple."
This inferior mentality and sinking back into old patterns is England’s biggest issue and has been for 10 years at major tournaments, both tactically and individually. Italy after Shaw goal, Spain second half, Croatia in ‘18 after Trippier, last night after Gordon’s goal. It was even mentioned by Tuchel after Croatia that he was worried about falling into old patterns and the most annoying thing is that a core group of this squad have been through them all together. It doesn’t seem to matter how many big games or trophies these boys win at club level unfortunately. Properly gutted man. How Argentina defended their lead in comparison was a completely different game of football, high pressure, defensive iq in the block and playing on the sides. I’m so bitter today, most annoying thing is we had them for 55 minutes of the game, right where we wanted.
Glad to see people are seeing things more clearly. Look at Kane’s comments are the match. The plan was to go forward they just mentally fell apart. Less on Tuchel more on the players and habit.
Having slept on it, does feel like this, its England muscle memory wrongfully embedded deep, i dont see a world where he was looking at 60 onward thinking yes this is what i want them to do tbh
Tuchel should be criticised for not offering an outlet. But the players fell back themselves. As he said in the interview, he was opposed to this with so many gaps between them he did what he did to save them. Arg quality was inevitable.
I dont think Tuchel told anyone to sit back but realised the weak mentality of the squad as they dropped deep and said to himself might as well try and help with the additions that fit this mindset.
England players gave up themselves.
A lot will come down to Tuchel. But the players were breaking down in organisation and leaving too many gaps. It’s the fact they weren’t able to do any of this, doesn’t come down to Tuchel imo. There are 2 things happening here at the same time that armchair analysts are missing
In a way the goals technically weren’t even because of the formation change
One was a corner where everyone’s too deep (his fault, players or set piece staff?) & the other is from Jude being FAR too narrow which goes against what Tuchel was trying to avoid
In his press conference, Tuchel essentially said that he thought the team automatically dropped back to defend the lead after the goal and lost all defensive intensity, so he tried to make changes to help defend crosses better without any luck.
England got absolutely battered between their goal & the formation change, the questions being asked shouldn’t be why he changed formation
They should be why was the mentality from the England players to be passive after scoring, & why didn’t Tuchel bring on out balls
Tuchel said in his interview that he changed nothing after the goal but the team naturally became more passive and couldn’t keep the ball. So he brought on more defenders to try and help them.
Seems like he is frustrated with how players performed after scoring
"As soon as you lose, you get criticised" 💬
Thomas Tuchel says he doesn't believe he got his substitutions wrong but will take any responsibility for the decisions.
As much as the commentary focuses on TT, the players fell back themselves before the subs. Feels like no one realised they lost their way before that. Easy to blame it on the manager as usual. The lack of def organisation has been a prob entire WC.
England concede from not having a player prepared covering the edge at a corner! Both spare players end up going to defend the short, leaving the D free.
You can’t leave that space unprotected against world class footballers
England have talent issues that naturally make things harder. They ought to build a elite team with a strong identity, starting from their keeper, Pickford, who has been a weak link.
Bad set piece defending there.
Basically leaves the best attacking passer in the world in space every time because they fail to send a second player out on short corners.
Tuchel: "We wanted to go for the second goal but we couldn't get out. We became more and more passive. We couldn't keep the ball. I don't think it was a structural problem."
Tuchel comments make sense. It was bizarre from the outside but looking at it from inside, it makes sense.
They clearly had poor def org. Jude in particular was poor in his defensive positioning (previous matches too).
@PremLeaguePanel On the first point, across the 70 mins no, but check what started happening between min 60-70 when Messi started to drift wider, time & time again there were 3v2’s & 2v1’s down the right
Difference in gaps between 1st (back 5) & 2nd screenshot (back 4, Pickford save)
Someone that understands things more clearer 👇
Even with 5 at the back some of those crosses were great. Tuchel deserve some criticism but 5 CB’s still couldn’t deal with the crosses.. and the amount of space they gave up was absurd
Let’s just say though: you can park whatever bus you want, the number of unbelievable passes and crosses that Messi was playing to force the win… He is still the best creator in the world at 39 years old. Which is absolutely ridiculous.
