As @DonShift3 points out in his fantastic book "Lessons From the Rhodesian Bush War: A Study in Survival, Rural Defense, and Collapse", this sort of thing is useful not only because it might stop attackers but because it dissuades them from attacking

Rhodesian farmers found even communist guerillas--more motivated to attack than the average burglar--were generally (though not always) dissauded by doing so by strong shows of defensive preparation and readiness to use force. Gates, razor wire, dogs, bunkered windows, rooftop weapon emplacements, and so on all served as reminders that they'd have to fight for it, and generally they thought that wasn't worth it and moved on

It's unlikely we'll find rooftop machine gun emplacements practicable any time soon...though the Rooftop Korean story is a good reminder that they might occasionally be...but nevertheless, what defensive preparations are useful for the situations one might realistically face are generally useful at leat as much for their deterrent effect as for whatever advantages they provide, and so internal defensive upgrades like this are useful but ought not be relied upon entirely to the detriment/ignoring of external defenses
