Houston man volunteers himself to be a crossing guard at one of the city's busiest intersections.
20-year-old Davonta Robbins spends his weekends and free time volunteering to help pedestrians cross at Montrose Boulevard and Westheimer Road.
"I try to do the best I can to make sure people cross the street safely," Robbins said.
"We mostly have a lot of speeders... there have been a lot of accidents. I do this just because so nobody else won't get hit."
Helping people cross the street is personal for Robbins.
In 2021, he was struck by a car that was fleeing from police. He was hospitalized for months with a shattered leg.
When he noticed danger at the Montrose intersection, he decided to step up and buy his own equipment to help pedestrians.
"I've had drivers stop and say 'Thank you,' because other than that, they would have hit the pedestrians."

@gratifihouston The eleventh street road diet has definitely made it easier for kids from Harvard Elementary to get to and from school more safely. It was certainly a blessing for my son and his friends.
@theSurlyBiker Damn bro, that’s sort of like walking into your adopted parents house after it’s been ransacked by thieves and telling them that it’s fine, their stuff wasn’t really that great.
@amn3siak@krobbn Heights bro here, since the inception of the bike lanes on 11th my kid and countless others have been able to cross 11th street much more safely on their walks home from Harvard Elementary. Those dividers are traffic calming devices for all users.
@AustrianInHOU For what it’s worth, I don’t see anything wrong with riding bikes to Shipley with your little girls, and I bet they had a blast on their adventure. Infrastructure makes rides like that easier, but the lack of infrastructure just means you have to be more creative. Kudos.
@gratifihouston I get so sick of explaining how much more safe the 11th street improvements have made it for the kids from Harvard Elementary to get home after school.
There are 3 schools on this corridor. When 11th was 4 lanes, it wasn't safe to cross. The community got four pedestrian safety islands added. Now Whitmire and Gafrick want to remove them. @BlueLineBikeLab
Bad news friends. The MKT Bridge is closed again. Appears the recent heavy rain washed out some of the supports. Thank you to @emmanume and @cfparma16 for confirming. Let's give @houparksboard time to investigate and share updates.
@theSurlyBiker@panaracer_world@PanaracerJ It looks like they have purple and green this year, but my distributors only have 40 and 45c. You might try Sim Works, they do custom Panaracer tires some times.
@theSurlyBiker It always the wrong time to put Scott’s on your lawn. You can always count on Nitro-phos products in Houston since they’re made here, and they have a great recommended schedule on their website.
@theSurlyBiker@Surly_Bikes Hell no, I hope not. That price definitely gets passed to the consumer, and they can ultimately decide weather they’re going to pay it or not, which isn’t great for retailers.
@theSurlyBiker@Surly_Bikes I’m pretty sure that almost everything cycling related outside of some children’s and electric categories have been subject to tariffs since his last admin.
