The Thai military has claimed that “White Phosphorus (WP) is not a chemical weapon.”
This statement is technically true, but dangerously misleading.
✔️ Yes – WP is not classified as a “chemical weapon” under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
❌ However – WP is strictly regulated under the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), particularly Protocol III, which prohibits the use of incendiary weapons against civilians or in civilian-populated areas.

Key points that must not be ignored:
WP is often described as a smoke or signaling device, but when used as a weapon, it causes horrific burns, continuous ignition upon exposure to air, and unbearable suffering.

In practice, its effects on civilians are no less devastating than other banned weapons.

International organizations such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have repeatedly stated: using WP in civilian areas amounts to a war crime.

👉 Therefore, saying “it is not a chemical weapon” is only half the truth. It does not absolve responsibility under international humanitarian law, which clearly forbids the use of WP as a weapon against civilian populations.

Even a prominent Thai human rights activist has to quietly post a call for Thailand to quickly release the 18 "captured" or "abducted" Cambodian soldiers, depending on which gov't who believe, due to strong ultranationalist fervour in #Thailand at the moment. #ThailandCambodia
