A new FDA-approved cancer treatment is using the power of sound waves to destroy tumors without a single incision.

The technology, known as histotripsy, relies on highly focused ultrasound waves to break apart tumor tissue. Unlike conventional treatments that may involve surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, this approach is entirely noninvasive.

The treatment works by generating tiny bubbles within the tumor. As these bubbles rapidly expand and collapse, they physically disrupt and destroy cancerous tissue while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy cells.

Doctors can monitor the procedure in real time using ultrasound imaging, giving them precise control over the treatment from start to finish.

The FDA has cleared histotripsy for the treatment of targeted liver tissue, including certain liver tumors. Clinical trials found the technology achieved important safety and performance targets in patients with both primary liver cancer and cancers that had spread to the liver.

Scientists are also investigating whether histotripsy can help the immune system fight cancer more effectively. Research in animals suggests that breaking apart tumors may reveal cancer-related proteins that were previously hidden, potentially helping the body recognize and attack remaining cancer cells. In several studies, this immune response was strong enough to prevent the cancer from returning or spreading in the majority of treated animals.

Researchers are now exploring how histotripsy could work alongside immunotherapy, opening the door to new ways of treating cancer throughout the body.

Although studies are ongoing, this approval represents a major advance in the development of noninvasive cancer treatments.
