One thing I have noticed recently about Nigerians abroad (outside home states) is that many of them spend years chasing money, but very little time building relationships with the people who will matter most in old age.

We joke about “village people,” ignore our parents’ calls, barely know our neighbours, and tell ourselves we’ll make time later.

Then one day, retirement and old age comes. The children are busy. Friends have disappeared. The house is full of things, but empty of conversations.

Growing old is not just about having enough money. It is about having people who still check on you without being reminded.

The greatest retirement plan is not wealth alone. It is the relationships you nurture while you are still young.

We are all ageing. The question is: what kind of old age are we preparing for?
