There’s a part of playing Division I football that most people will never see.

They see the uniform, the stadium, the Saturdays and maybe a few names they remember years later.

What they don’t see is everything it took just to earn the right to stand in a picture like this.

The coaches who told you that you’d never play your position. The people who doubted you. The hours spent lifting, running, studying and trying to become bigger, faster and stronger. Learning your assignment and understanding that one penalty, missed block or mental mistake could cost your team.

Looking at this picture now, I realize there was an innocence to this part of my Husker journey. I wasn’t the starter yet. I was simply one of a group of young men who had all sacrificed something to earn the privilege of wearing that Nebraska uniform.

Eventually, I was blessed to become a starter for two years. But then came the pressure of having all eyes on you.

Every carry. Every block. Every mistake.

People didn’t see the injuries, the injections just to get onto the field, or the pain pills after a game just to quiet your body enough to sleep that night—only to wake up and prepare to do it all over again.

And no matter how much you gave, there was always an opinion.

Looking back, I can see a little bit of myself disappearing under the weight of trying to meet everyone else’s expectations.

Life eventually taught me what I wish that young man knew:

You cannot live your life trying to prove your value to people who have already decided how much they think you’re worth.

Do the work. Honor your commitment. Appreciate the people beside you. And when the noise gets loud, remember who you are and who God called you to be.

Most people will never know what it took to get there.

But you know.

And all these years later, I can say something that will always mean something to me:

I got to wear the N. 🌽🏈❤️
