I find it so interesting how a lot of the responses to this tweet focus on justifying why our wealth is so low relative to other ethnic groups.
It's not that I don't agree with these justifications, its just that whenever the question is asked why we aren't richer, many feel the need to justify and defend our position rather than focusing on how we can advance it.
Whilst there are many valid reasons outside of our control why we aren't richer. There are also many reasons within our control why black African household wealth isn't greater.
There's a a massive problem in many African households with men refusing to commit to one woman, cheating on their wives, having families back home. Dysfunctional family dynamics are wealth destroyers.
There's also a problem with many older generations fixation with Africa. There's a massive wealth transfer to Africa that occurs when we try to build homes there instead of buying homes here, homes which many of them will never live in. Let’s talk about the financial burden of sustaining entire family networks back home.
Then there's the role of spirituality, the conviction that giving more money to the Church will miraculouly empower you financially. Many have given their way in to poverty.
Let's talk about materialism, there's a massive issue with ego and feeling that you need to drive a big car and have designer etc to have status and good standing within your community.
Let's talk about weddings, particularly Nigerian weddings where even people on average incomes are convinced they need to have a calibre of weddings comparable to a celebrity.
I could go on, but the honest truth is that there are many wealth destructive traits that exist within the black African community that have slowed the progress we have had in this country.
That is not to say progress is not being made, and there isn’t hope for the future. But the honest reality is that if you start later than other ethnic groups due to being more of a recent arrival to the country, Then you need to be even more focused, intentional and strategic about wealth building. We do not have the same margin of error to make these mistakes as other groups.
But wouldn’t you lose out on the employer matching your contributions?
I personally do both. Put as much as they match and let the rest grow faster in a S&S ISA tax free. Where I can access that money if needed
NOW - Trump on Somali immigrants: "When they come from hell, and they complain and do nothing but bitch. We don't want em in our country. Let em go back to where they came from and fix it!"
BREAKING: The Office for Budget Responsiblity has published its economic and fiscal document *BEFORE* Rachel Reeves delivers her budget. Unprecedented.
If you’re a high earner then it’s probably best to pay it off as soon as possible.
You’ll end up paying way more than necessary if you left it. Due to the high interest continuing to inflate the balance and greater portion of earnings used to pay it down
what is the point in paying off your student loan? it's not counted as normal debt and it gets wiped after 30 years. seems like such a silly financial decision
