@BBOWT Hi. Respect for all the fab work @BBOWT do but that’s not Blackthorn, it’s Cherry Plum. Starting to flower a few weeks earlier and having green twigs and larger flowers, this is a widely planted and naturalised non-native species from SE Europe.

@RasenSchmiele @whiterosegreen Behaves like this in north Wales too, and the heathy parts of Berkshire and North Hants in southern England. In Oxon it’s mostly a plant of the Oxford Canal, like Carex paniculata. It’s scattered along the Thames, sometimes growing on lock gates.

We spent some time this week translocating more Long-stalked Yellow-sedge (Carex lepidocarpa. Scarce in Oxon, it now mostly survives in nature reserves and SSSIs like ours with suitable management.

We've come a long way in ten years. This year we had over 120 flowering Marsh Helleborines (Epipactis palustris) on the west side #SSSI. In 2012 we had none when we started to cut and rake. Over time, seed has blown from the other side of the Valley, and grown...

Great to welcome @PondRiverStream to the Valley this morning to plant Flat Sedge (Blysmus compressus) and Creeping Marshwort (Apium repens). Both plants are rare in Oxon, and have been grown by volunteers in the #GrowWet project.

@whiterosegreen @NosterfieldLNR @OBGHA have been growing it for us at @PondRiverStream for reintroduction in Oxon. We’ve not grown it at scale but it doesn’t stay in pots long and runs all over, with the stolons liking hanging into water. Suggest spacing out cuttings in large trays of wet compost?

Fun surveying for interesting roses last weekend with @Blysmus in quality chalk grassland @RowantNNR. Rubbing leaves to smell apple scent, looking for resinous glands, hairs, acicles, sepals up or down & shapes of prickles. The findings? Expert says lots of sweet briar hybrids!
