As the @SavetheWbf Inquiry resumes hearings, let's join local artist Dorothy Rendell At Whitechapel Bell Foundry, literally on her doorstep and readily accessible to her sketchpad. tks @thegentleauthor@BishopsgateInst https://t.co/TNAM5f8fL6
And I must vocalise my view that there is more to heritage buildings than just bricks and mortar... it’s the #intangibleheritage that makes them #places we care so much about and shells filled with life. @SavetheWbf
A few days into the Whitechapel Bell Foundry Public Enquiry, now more than ever I feel the need to share this very insightful document about #intangible#heritage. https://t.co/DicMXYIn08 I work with buildings and I am passionate about heritage.
Malcolm Fryer says a make-do-and-mend approach to the Bell Foundry will not work. I can't see why. It has worked wonderfully at Wilton's Music Hall. Keeping the use of a building is much the best way of protecting its character long term. Not a big hotel.
The Re-Form proposal uses 100% of the foundry as a foundry, instead of what Dr. Filmer-Sankey describes as its vibrant use as a cafe 'in its new life'. 'Is that a problem ?' he asks. Yes, most people think it is.
At the end of a long day, it's clear that there is a radical difference in approach as to how to conserve a historic building. Those appearing for Raycliff think that the interest of the building came to an end when the bell foundry closed; those for Re-Form want it reinstated.
For those new to the campaign #SaveTheWhitechapelBellFoundry, not only is @SavetheWbf offering a good narrative as the inquiry progresses, but we are also lucky to have @CSaumarezSmith's journal with this being #61 entry! https://t.co/DW3EPoJZHP Wiki: https://t.co/0WhhWRMwjJ
If you want the WHITECHAPEL BELL FOUNDRY to continue as a fully working foundry rather than as a sideshow for tourists in the lobby of a boutique hotel, register now to watch the Public Inquiry that starts on Tuesday by emailing [email protected]
Architect William Burges is very proud of the bell on his hotel to indicate the site's historic past and how it blends with 'arguably its one of London's best elevations.' He says 'its not a theme park' but you could fool me!
Excellent news. Well done to everyone involved in making this happen. And thank you once again to @HeritageFundUK for reaffirming their commitment and support to @Re_formHeritage as they continue to use heritage to illuminate history by saving Harper Street and making it live!
