@daniellamyoung I just got to Thailand at 12, & I remember being so sad when I saw how many fatherless military "made" kids there were from that. I related, I guess. They were called luk-khrung, which literally means "half-child." There was a lot of discrimination against them back then too.

This Mother's day, we remember and celebrate the strength and bravery of a mother's journey many of us know intimately: escaping a cult and breaking generational abuse, a mother’s journey to set herself and her children free.

In our first post for our series on Firsts after leaving a high control group, @VerityCarter22 describes the new feelings and experiences she had after leaving COG-TFI. So many upheavals to the world one has known for so long can be overwhelming but also exhilarating.

Our first post for our new series of art and poetry by #cogtfisurvivors is a poem, "Secrets", by E.S. It talks about brainwashing, #grooming, and being forced to keep dark secrets from a young age.
If you’re reading this, someone wants you to know that every time you’ve felt out of place in the world was because you didn’t have the proper support in a vulnerable moment. It’s not because you don’t belong. You matter even on your hardest days. You’ve always mattered.
I think another layer of difficulty in being born into, then leaving a cult is that instead of having relatives as a support system, other cult members are made to feel like family. So once I left, blood relatives felt like undeveloped, obligatory relationships.
Hell YES we are! Our interview with @CultVaultPod is in March, but check it out now, it's a fantastic podcast, & Kacey is a great host! Be sure to check out Butterflies & Bravery too! As always, we'd love to hear your story as a second gen, DM if you're interested!
@CultVaultPod Yes! LOL Whisper (me) has 4, co-host Jemima has 1, all adults now, & still bundles of chaos. Wouldn't have it any other way. The other day I heard someone call their kid a "f*ck trophy" & I laughed until I snorted. It's an especially fun name for them when you're a single mom 😝
Trauma survivors often get in the habit of spending a lot of time alone, because alone is safe-- relatively, anyway. Alone is controllable. We understand alone. We don't have to stress about alone.
People are unpredictable. When we're alone there's less risk to manage.
So true! Being born into one, thru our entire childhood & teen years, "we're not a cult" was a regular indoctrination. If your entire community is constantly explaining why they're not a cult...you might be a cult member.
