Seriously, Philly's story sounds very familiar. A mayor with control of the school board closes schools. People get mad and want an elected school board. But what happens when you try to separate the school board from the city? In Chicago we still don't really know...
Payton has always been a unique situation because it’s landlocked. That's exactly why the surrounding community, public agencies and school leaders need to work together to help kids.
For years, I’ve wondered why a long-term solution couldn’t be developed with the Chicago Park District and Seward Park.
The space exists. Turf fields could create opportunities for soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse and the community as a whole.
But it’s not like we haven’t seen this story before.
Just down the street, Latin spent years working through challenges with neighbors and community stakeholders.
And surprise, surprise: Adults argued then, too.
A decade later, that field Latin helped fund has become a tremendous asset for kids and the entire community.
On Chicago’s Southeast Side, Washington is finally getting a field this summer after years of traveling elsewhere to play games and practice despite having land sitting right there.
Years ago in the South Suburbs, Stagg battled opposition over everything from birds and trees to concerns about what cars students were driving.
True story. I sat there as a 17-year-old listening to senior citizens try to block it.
The argument from senior citizens was that the kids didn’t need more fields at the Palos Hills school, which is landlocked, too.
The reality?
We should always be investing in opportunities that enhance the lives of kids.
Especially today, when sport provides so much more than competition. It creates self care, belonging, friendships, mentorship and human connection.
That's what this is really about.
It’s not about wins and losses.
It’s about kids.

“I have 8 years of data from Baltimore City Schools.”
The most important education stories often take years to unfold.
@ChrisPapst followed students over nearly a decade—from elementary school through graduation—to see what was actually happening inside Baltimore's school system.
The results raise some uncomfortable questions.
Preview from my upcoming conversation author of Failure Factory. The full interview on @QMCast is coming soon. @schoolchoicenow👇
Parents expect their kids to be safe and treated with dignity and respect in school. Any effort to make the system more fair needs to start from this simple fact: No one who harms a child belongs in a school.
Glad we're all pro-democracy and pro-ballot access now.

Where can candidates send their invoices for expenses incurred fighting petition challenges two years ago?
The new exam will take more than double the time to administer as the old HSAT and will include some additional subjects, CPS says. https://t.co/IQ6Lom6HT4
I turned in more than 3x the required signatures to get on the ballot and the most out of any candidate. But that’s not stopping Billionaire Michael Sacks from sending Rahm's lawyer after me. We don't need to challenge the other candidates because we have a citywide coalition to stand up for students and support champions who will deliver the schools they deserve.
More than half of the 51 prospective candidates for Chicago’s first fully elected school board are facing objections to the ballot petitions they filed. https://t.co/C5t1dtCuQV
A wild fact from @beckyvevea 's story about ballot challenges for school board candidates: "Only two of 21 races — in districts 2a and 4a — are currently guaranteed to have more than one candidate."

More petition-challenge drama beyond the Chicago school board races. Some say that it's just bare-knuckle politics as usual. Others say that with democracy under threat, it's time for a change.
Patty García was handed the Dem nomination for a US House seat by Rep. Chuy García.
Now she wants to knock two independents off the ballot. People tied to her campaign objected to signatures for Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez & Mayra Macías. For @chicagotribune:

Somebody tell Michael Sacks & Becky Carroll that bill wasn’t ours in Springfield. We good over here. In fact, if there are candidates being challenged by the billionaire…call us bc we’d like to help you remain on the ballot. For real. 1/
This fall, 8th graders in Chicago will be taking a new admissions test for high school: the pre ACT.
It'll be a longer test that CPS says is supposed to provide more info about student performance and won't be offered in languages other than English.
