@LowtherTeaches Great question! I definitely think deemphasizing the final grade product is a way we can encourage students to continue writing for themselves. Teach students the importance of writing as a process and not as a measurable thing that determines them passing/failing #ndowteachchat
@NDOWUnmask Writing is not always analytical + informative. It’s not always the 5-paragraph essay type format. It includes voice and personality and trauma and ugliness and beauty. It is life. Authenticity is crucial in transforming your writing into art and a real world product #NDOWUNMASK
@NDOWUnmask Students know when we are fake. They know when we are not genuine. When we show them our worries, our mistakes, our flaws, our celebrations, we are uncovering a real person, not just a disciplinary figure, that they can look up to and relate with #ndowunmask
@NDOWUnmask Students may not write authentically for writing assignments that have little meaning to their lives. Inviting the digital world that they use everyday and write as their real selves into the classroom is a way in for students to begin to unmask their writing in ELA
#NDOWUNMASK The purpose of a masquerade is to pretend to be something you’re not. How have you seen this “masquerade” play out in writing and teaching writing to our students? #WhyIWrite#ncte
@NDOWUnmask To unmask is to reveal your true self, or a least a version you can share with others. I try to unmask parts of my life and things/events/issues that may be outside my comfort zone in my writing to attempt to relate to my intended audience and show vulnerability #NDOWUNMASK
Let’s talk #metaphors.
What might it mean to “unmask,” and how could this theme of unmasking be connected to our writerly identities? ✍🏻✍️✍🏽✍🏿
#NDOWUnmask
@NDOWUnmask When I think of a masquerade, I think of a sea full of masks and beautiful costumes that hide or give a different perception of your true self. Like Halloween, we take on a different persona to portray ourselves as someone we’re not #NDOWUNMASK
@NDOWUnmask To encourage students to write, I would use writing prompts to encourage students to write independent about something that matters to them
@NDOWUnmask I remember entering a writing competition in like 7th grade and I didn’t win but I felt accomplished as a writer and not just as a student in English
