Based on the most recent data (2024–2025), there are approximately 2,500 to 3,000 officially recognized autonomous communities across the five core Igbo states.

Every autonomous community typically has a "Town Union" branch in cities like Lagos, Abuja, PH, London etc

In Igboland, there's something known as Autonomous Community. It's the fourth tier of governance below the Local Government Areas (LGAs).

They were initially created to formalize traditional leadership headed by The Eze or Igwe to bring development closer to the grassroots.
