Just finished Mina the Hollower. Easily my GOTY. Love letter to classic Zelda and Castlevania with some modern sensibilities too. Definitely deserves a place among the indie GOATs and Yacht Club Games showed Shovel Knight wasn't a fluke.
@RoytaMustDie Only feels that way if you played like how I did as a dumb kid and flee from random battles a lot. Otherwise, if you just fight as you go, you'll be fine
Hearing the entire Invincible VS crowd yell “JUST FUCKING DIE!” is genuinely so hype. Shoutouts to @AleksLeVO for adding another fighting game crowd chant to the list.
@LocalBtnMasher Fighting games have always had a lot of releases. New games bring in new players and numbers. Deva also treat the new ones like live service games where before they just released a billion new versions of games in the arcades.
@FinalMasonry@Niflheimm155983 I could also see that being the norm in Japan for societal reasons. Arcades and a more connected lifestyle (living closer vs suburbs, public transportation etc..) meant that the person behind you in Japanese arcade was actually waiting vs the West where maybe there wasn't anyone.
@FinalMasonry@Niflheimm155983 Well I stand corrected. Didn't know the culture differed that way. Makes you wonder why continues were introduced the way they were. Could've been pressured from arcade shops that they won't make enough money.
@FinalMasonry@Niflheimm155983 I think it can be both. I didn't know 1CC was norm in Japan, but I'd love an article to see why they thought that. Again don't mean to shit on arcade games, but I'm skeptical that's truly how they were designed.
@FinalMasonry@Niflheimm155983 As for why Japanese arcades and games stayed in business a lot longer but are still struggling now. Don't think it's anything to do with quality, but cultural shifts away from it. Still I don't mean to shit on arcades completely, I love the feeling of holding worn a MAS stick.
@FinalMasonry@Niflheimm155983 I haven't done the deepest dives on most arcade games. I do remember spending a lot on a house of the dead cabinet near where I grew up. Great game, lots of fun but also meant to get me to keep paying. Arcades would've gone out of business even sooner if they didn't do this
@FinalMasonry@Niflheimm155983 Can play into both mentalities which helps to contribute to their classic status. Final Fight is a great game. It's designed for both mastery but also the guy that wants to spend 15 credits getting through it once
@FinalMasonry@Niflheimm155983 It's the goal. Some games are much better designed than others with getting further with each credit as you get better, but arcade games really had to make money. Play most any arcade game and you'll see a chill first level followed by a huge spike. Plays into sink cost etc...
@FinalMasonry@Niflheimm155983 Continues didn't inherently do it. Arcade games are very clever. The first stage or 2 is usually not too bad and then you're thrown into the thick of it with the goal from the developer you will credit feed at that point
@LocalBtnMasher Idk man, it's a throwback to old Zelda. Most of the game is just gonna be exploring and puzzle solving which this isn't gonna be problem
@JakeBaldino Not my thing. This coming out didn't affect games that are my thing coming out this year (Mouse PI for Hire and Saros). People get weird when games score well at major review outlets
