Have you heard of the term “PMIE”? It stands for Perpetration and Betrayal-Based Morally Injurious Events.” In a 2017 study, “Distinguishing War-Related PTSD Resulting from PMIEs” (authors Alexander Jordan, et al), the connection between PMIEs and PTSD sampled 867 Marines who experienced heavy ground combat while deployed overseas. The results showed that over a third of the Marines reported exposure to PMIEs. The researchers concluded that guilt and shame are not adequately addressed within the current classification of PTSD as defined in the DSMV (Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition). PTSD tends to focus on danger-based experiences, while shame and guilt are being overlooked in PTSD diagnosis and treatment. This study and many others are pointing to the psychological struggles of guilt, shame, and anger that are contributing to suicidal thoughts. We must educate and continue to study this phenomenon. Our active duty and veteran populations deserve to get the specific help they need.
@BlastingThrough Given the unique transgressions experienced by our armed forced - by enemies, "partners", and bureaucrats alike - I can see how that addition of guilt and shame factors in, and is very under-addressed.
Hard to address what the powers-that-be hide behind soft language though.
All the absurd side plots surfacing through the Malfoid trend struck up an idea for an equally absurd scene.
Luna Lovegood being tracked down for noticing things could make for an odd plot.
I don't have the ability to match what I envisioned, so Grok did all the heavy lifting.
This may be nothing, but I may not recall when I wake:
Blade Runner final monologue scene, but it's Luna Lovegood with damaged Spectrespecs
"I've.. -noticed- things you people ought to believe.."
@redteneri Dove into this last night. The Heart Nebula's eastern neighbor is the Soul Nebula.
You can draw out neat symbolic ties with the myths of Draco, Cepheus, and Cassiopeia. Draw in Hercules and Perseus at opposing sides of that line, and the heroic symbolism just keeps growing.
@ShamashAran That negotiation genuinely stoked up a fear or anxiety while I was reading. Incredible. I love how you wrote this out, and how Lucius' role has been reframed into something even more complex.
Side note: the snappy exchange at the start reminded me of Deus Ex's, perfect execution.
@Unixsystem13@JordykJordan@grok Draw a line from Hercules through Draco, Cepheus & Cassiopeia (holding the Heart & Soul Nebulae), to Perseus
Cassiopeia = Lucius (vainglory endangering the child), Cepheus = Narcissa (complicit/protective)
Draco is both the object of yearning -and- the pure guardian of the Heart.
This may be nothing, but I may not recall when I wake:
Blade Runner final monologue scene, but it's Luna Lovegood with damaged Spectrespecs
"I've.. -noticed- things you people ought to believe.."
@leaillex This is profoundly beautiful, the lighting on these pieces keeps surprising me. Even watching your process, it still seems so magical as it comes to life.
@WytPilledCurze The absurd subplots returned fond and bizarre memories of the before times.
Flitwick v. Rita Skeeter, Orca Patronus, Snape the Wingman, and Dumbledore's inescapable HOWEVER moments.
In every era, madmen seep through the cracks and build uncanny stories with charms of their own.
@Doomer2Happy I wholeheartedly agree, and I think these pieces complement the rewrites on main events so well for that very reason.
There's also much more breathing room for gradual and unpressured change that leads to the unresolved angst giving way to lovely stories and reconciliation.
@D0l0s1 When the "Nihilist Penguin" resurfaced earlier this year, an optimistic reframing surfaced along with it.
He was not marching to certain doom, but a pioneer seeking to expand into new territories.
Pioneering is the aspiration.

@Aloofcannon Anticipatory grief.
I am 100% certain it's "comorbid" with other struggles faced by this cohort.
You're grieving for the loss of something you haven't lost yet, depriving yourself of the joy in the moment.
Do not let the thief of joy win.
@HariSel57511397 "Yet with every plea, the manuscript gnawed with hunger.
The words wanted to be placed. The page yearned for ink.
Each keystroke would bring him closer to freedom. The key was so close.
'One more chapter. Just one.' He told himself.
The keyboard nodded as he pushed forth."
@DavidBenedict0 An archivist rises to the occasion in each generation of fan fiction. It's beautiful, and a little nostalgic, to see someone take on the mantle.
Godspeed to you and all the wonderful artists in the community.
@basedbinkie From limited experience, with Nier Gestalt and a few others that did it well - I find it very interesting and captivating.
The setting lives in the shadow of something greater. What happened?
The disconnect between your interest while characters take it for granted elevates it.
@DivinaCalamis It's a 'risk' when you truly engage with fiction, especially where romance is involved.
We see what we don't have, fine tuned, convince ourselves we -can't- have it and make romance itself fictional.
It's difficult to reframe that envy into aspiration, but it can be your fuel.
