@Tuko_co_ke I have attempted to deal with this matter privately through Facebook Messenger and on Email but you are ignoring me. So let me bring it matter to the Public in order for you to take action. Last week someone brought this article to my attention https://t.co/I4PsMCvMMm
I want to share an unpleasant and racist experience that my husband and I had at @PeponiHotel in Lamu earlier this week. Black people being treated with utmost disrespect in our own country. When will this end? @magicalkenya#SomeoneTellPeponiLamu
The hotel has daily tours to Lamu town. We missed the day 2 tour and was set to go on day 3. We woke up to very heavy rains and decided to call the reception to check if the tour is still on. They said they would cal us back in 30 minutes to let us know.
After 30 minutes they called and informed us that the tour was cancelled due to the heavy rains. We then opted to take our time and go for breakfast a bit later as we didn’t need to go early due to the cancellation. We then headed for breakfast at 9. Barely had we sat down when
the reception called us at 9.03am telling us that the tour is back on and the boat is about to leave. (PS this tour is usually scheduled for 9am and guests are advised to have early breakfast. Since it was cancelled,we took our time)..anyway back to the call.
We explained that we have just sat for breakfast, how can they just inform us that the tour is back on at 9.03am for a 9am tour? and that it was unfair to expect us to miss breakfast to make it to the boat. We requested if they can wait for us..
He said he will consult and let us know. After some few minutes he came back and told us that there was a briefing going on about the tour on the boat and that he didn’t want to interrupt the person that was doing the briefing, so we wait,
but that he has also alerted the captain, and the captain said he will not leave until they heard from us. We said ok cool..and continued to wait. 15 minutes later we finished our breakfast, no feedback yet from the reception so we decided to go check.
On our way to the reception we bumped into the host lady (She’s the owner, a white lady), who pretended that she hadn’t seen us earlier and asked us if we were going to the tour. We said yes. She said unfortunately the boat left, and they couldn’t wait.
She then gave us a tour guide and told us how good he is and he will take us for the tour, but we will hitch a ride from some guests who were being taken to the airport. She said all this will be complementary since the boat left us,
and asked us if this worked for us, we said yes it does. So we proceeded. We had a lovely tour and came back. Only for the guide to ask us for payment, to our surprise. We explained that it was complementary and asked that he reaches out to the host.
He said the guides are normally paid kes 2k..that’s the standard. We said then charge it to the room and we would sort it out with the host. Fast forward to check out day we get the bill and see they had included the 2k. We requested the cashier to remove it
as it was complementary. He said he will speak to the lady host. As we were having breakfast, the lady host came to our table, and this is where sh*t literally hits the fan..what happened hereafter was completely UNBELIEVABLE and SAD!
She started by saying how she informed people during the briefing that you pay your guide 2k. We told her we weren’t at the briefing so how could we have known? She said she didn’t see the need to repeat herself again,(as she condescendingly gesticulated at us). Repeat what??
We told her she said our own tour would be complementary, since it wasn’t our fault the reception told us it was cancelled and then it’s back on, and that we were left even after being promised they will not leave until hearing from us.
She started arguing and talking down on us, each time we try to explain she rudely interrupts with lies, amnesia and more buts as she shakes her head condescendingly. We kept insisting we won’t pay and how unfair it was, and she was visibly getting agitated.
In the middle of the “argument” she angrily interrupted and said she will pay the 2k and walked away swinging the check-out bill mid air. We were left in shock and disbelief, as the waiters who were around there watched in shock too.
After 10 minutes she shouted from the distance how she has paid the 2 k as she walked away, with the most disdain and matharau look I’ve ever seen. It was truly a sad morning. What an anti-climax to the special moment we had come to enjoy
In addition to this debacle, even days before it happened, she would take time to greet every white person at the restaurant and when she would reach our table it seemed like it was a task for her./severally ignoring us.
