A frustrating day for Dunsink and our communities.

Once again, Fingal County Council management attempted to rush councillors through hundreds of motions on one of Dublin’s biggest proposed developments.

Decisions that will impact communities for generations should never be rushed through like this. Many councillors were clearly frustrated, and rightly so.

Today’s outcomes were deeply disappointing, particularly around protecting our environment, heritage and local communities.

Thank you to the councillors who stood their ground, challenged the process and fought for more time. Thanks to their efforts, we now have an additional meeting tomorrow at 5pm.

We are not against housing. We are against poor planning.

We have one opportunity to get this right, and quite frankly, our communities deserve better.

Today’s vote at Fingal County Council is an important moment for Dunsink and the surrounding communities. The decision could shape our area for generations to come.

I fully support building more homes. We urgently need them. But we must build homes where people can live well, not tiny boxes where quality of life becomes an afterthought. We need homes that accommodate people and neighbourhoods where families can truly flourish.

The proposed development of 16,200 homes raises serious questions that deserve proper consideration.

🌿 Protect our natural landscape and preserve the rural identity of the area.

🔭 Protect Dunsink Observatory and respect its heritage and scientific importance.

🌳 Safeguard biodiversity and the green spaces that make our area special.

🚗 Plan infrastructure and transport properly. Our roads are already under pressure. We must explore better connectivity, including the feasibility of a new road or bridge connection to the M50 to help reduce congestion.

🏘️ Choose healthy density, not density at any cost. Housing must be accompanied by schools, healthcare, community facilities and reliable transport.

📢 Give residents a voice. A project of this scale, affecting so many people in Castleknock, Ashtown, Finglas, the Navan Road and beyond, should have been more widely publicised, with a longer public consultation period.

We must think about future generations and the legacy we leave behind.

Let us measure success not just by the number of homes we build, but by the health, happiness and quality of life of the families who will live in them.

We need more homes, but we also need thoughtful planning, sustainable communities and a future that respects both people and nature.

Dunsink deserves a plan that gets this balance right.
