The original ending of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was much darker: Joel and Clementine, now elderly, were shown back at Lacuna, erasing each other yet again — suggesting an endless cycle of pain and repetition.

Because this felt too bleak, the film’s final cut instead shows them choosing to try again, aware of the risks but willing to embrace imperfection. It shifts the tone from fatalistic to fragile hope, keeping the melancholy but adding human choice and resilience.
