South African lab technician, Nozipho Mlotshwa, was waiting for the test results for a potential HIV vaccine, when the order came from the United States to stop work.

In a lab at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, technician Nozipho Mlotshwa had been waiting for crucial test results when the order to cease operations came through.

Her team’s early vaccine prototypes had successfully triggered immune responses in rabbits, leading to hopes that a breakthrough was near.

“This was very exciting. We were getting quite good results,” said Mlotshwa.

Now, blood samples from the trial animals sit untouched in freezers, their future uncertain.

“This was Africa-led. We were building local capacity to develop and produce our own vaccines,” said Professor Patrick Arbuthnot, director of the research unit.

The halted trials were part of a $45 million USAID-funded program called BRILLIANT, an ambitious HIV vaccine initiative led by South African scientists and institutions. A separate vaccine trial scheduled for human testing in South Africa, Kenya, and Uganda has also been frozen.
