As the #WorldChampionships2026 get underway, how fitting that players from Indonesia have won a total of 81 World Championship medals as Indonesia celebrates the 81st anniversary of Independence Day.
Also, a happy 10-year anniversary to Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir who on #IndonesiaIndependenceDay 10 years ago won #Olympic Gold in the Mixed Doubles at the 2016 Rio #OlympicGames.
Wishing all Indonesians, especially my Indonesian friends and all #badminton fans, a very happy 81st Indonesia Independence Day.
Selamat Hari Kemerdekaan

Peter Pan was a free-spirted magical boy who refused to grow up. There are numerous engaging characters in the book by J M Barrie, such as the controlling Captain Hook (Captain of the pirate ship the Jolly Roger) and Nana, the beloved family nursemaid to the Darling children who are whisked away by Peter Pan to the island of Neverland, a place where time passes, but Peter doesn’t age.
Such is the popularity of the book that Peter Pan has become an expression meaning forever young.
There are certain athletes who exhibit the Peter Pan effect as they appear to defy the natural aging process by their ability to remain not just a contender, but to excel or win when most contemporaries have long since retired.
Tom Brady, widely regarded as American Football’s greatest ever quarterback won his 7th and last Super Bowl in 2021 aged 43. And at 41, LeBron James is still a dominant basketball player and recently completed a record breaking 23rd season in the NBA.
During the recent FIFA World Cup, 41-year-old Christiano Ronaldo scored in a record 6th consecutive World Cup. While 39-year-old Lionel Messi scored 8 goals to take his World Cup tally to 21, the second highest in World Cup history.
At the #ChinaOpen2026, 36-year-old Chou Tien Chen won his second Super 1000 men’s singles title, 7 years after his first. Not only has he now contested at least one final every year for 16 consecutive years, but he has also surpassed Hendra Setiawan’s previous record to become the oldest winner of a Premier Superseries or WT Super 1000 title, across all disciplines.
Chou, like Peter Pan, is free-spirited. The desire to be in control of his own destiny (unlike the crew of the Jolly Roger) means he has shunned convention and chosen not to have a coach, preferring to travel the world with his delightful physio Victoria Kao. Like Nana with the Darling children, she is constantly attentive to Chou’s needs during matches, literally sprinting onto court at each interval to help and encourage.
Chou appears to live in his own Neverland where time passes, but like Peter Pan, he retains a magical, eternal youthfulness.
… And long may that continue.
