I mean, I wouldn't call every single animator that underperforms on works nowadays just simply gotten the short end of the stick most of the time. Some people working today simply are not operating at the same mastery level as top-tier legacy animators, and that's not always because they're victims of the system.

There is truth that animators back then were simply just built different due to the constraints of the technology and lack of shortcuts that came with analog animation, which weeded out the weak and force the competent to further mastery in every single aspect, producing better quality works as a result instead of worse.

This made them produce the most quality of work under those strictest of deadlines on top of that.

I'd even argue that overall, the pressure of deadlines changed much over the years. They've just simply been forced to output from speed alone rather than using modern shortcuts in technology today and prioritizing throughput and safety.

The advancement of technology doesn't happen in a vacuum. The pool of available animators are much much more higher, with the spectrum of skill variance being much more higher due to modern options that eases the experience, and lowers the barrier of entry immensely, even if there more higher-skilled animatiors at the top that take advantage of modern technology.

There are other factors to this like the overall environment and expectations of the timeframe that would affect the outcome, but the general fact is that analog animation is just something you can't cheep out on without it looking garbage, at least nowhere near the same effectiveness as nowadays.

Disney tried back then. They couldn't even tell if it was worth it in their attempts to do so.

Paired with the shortcuts and the reality that animations for larger studios are made to make money, it's only natural that as it became easier, it'll gravitate towards lower quality works.
