“Stockport’s on fire.” So tweeted Stockport Council when Taylor Harwood-Bellis was called up with Phil Foden and Cole Palmer to the England squad. Foden and Palmer have since withdrawn through injury, and another England international from Stockport, Kobbie Mainoo, was already out. “We might as well just move Wembley up here,” the council added.
Palmer is from Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, but went to Gatley Primary School which has a Stockport postcode, encouraging the local council to claim him. Foden is known as the “Stockport Iniesta”, Mainoo grew up playing for Cheadle & Gatley FC, one of Stockport’s best-known amateur clubs, while Harwood-Bellis went to Stockport School.
Harwood-Bellis, who played in the Stockport Metro Junior League graced by Foden, trained with England at St George’s Park today and flies out to Athens tomorrow for Thursday’s Nations League showdown against Greece.
So why’s Stockport a hotbed? “Something in the air I think, in Stockport!” Harwood-Bellis replied. “It’s a good town, good people, the club Stockport County is the big supporter of that, there’s football everywhere. Down the road from Manchester, City and United, footballing area. The grass roots is good.”
He has family connections with Stockport County, his uncle Steve as a director and his father Martin dressing up as the club's mascot Vernon Bear. “Not once!” Harwood-Bellis laughed. “He’s done it for a few times! He was the bear. Sad to see him stop doing that!”
When he returned to Stockport School and presented them with an England age-group No 5 shirt, Harwood-Bellis’ relatives sent messages of delight to see him visiting his old school, being humble and keeping his feet on the ground. He was earmarked for prominence from an early age. As a 14-year-old at Manchester City’s academy, Harwood-Bellis was chosen for the official photoshoot alongside Pep Guardiola when the new manager arrived in 2016.
He learned on loan from City at Blackburn, Anderlecht, Stoke, Burnley and then Southampton before signing permanently for £20m. “When I went on loan to Southampton there was an obligation (to buy) on promotion. I was buzzing it happened. I am so happy to be at Southampton. I’m never going to be one to sit on the bench. I’ve got to play.” #ENG #SaintsFC #MCFC
@sweeneytoddian@SkySportsNews Bizarre. Especially as we’re appointing an unheard of coach from Norwich! Don’t even think you’d find 5% of Stoke fans who were wanting to sack Schuey.
