It was never a joke casting. Channing was supposed to have a standalone movie and play Gambit MULTIPLE times across MULTIPLE movies in what was fox’s Marvel connected universe with the X-men and 2015 F4 as the “equivalent” to the MCU. 1 prior to this wasn’t enough.
