Either this comes from ignorance, or you are deliberately dismissing the history of a country that contributed greatly to the African continent. Somalia’s contributions to Africa were extensive, and many of them came at a time when African states and liberation movements were still fighting colonialism, apartheid, and foreign domination.

It began with Somalia’s own long struggle against colonial rule, including the Dervish resistance, which became one of the most remarkable and prolonged anti-colonial resistance movements in Africa.

After gaining independence in 1960, Somalia did not simply turn inward and focus on itself. It became one of the founding members of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, an organization established in part to promote African unity and help complete the liberation of the continent from colonial rule.

Somalia then used its diplomatic position on the international stage to speak for Africans who were still living under colonialism. During its time on the UN Security Council in the early 1970s, Somalia pushed for stronger action against Portuguese colonialism and supported efforts to cut off the military assistance that enabled Portugal to continue its colonial wars in African territories such as Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau.

Somalia also supported African liberation movements beyond its own borders and stood behind struggles against colonialism and apartheid across the continent. That support was not merely rhetorical. Somalia provided political, diplomatic, educational, and material support to liberation movements fighting for independence and majority rule.

And Somali solidarity did not stop at Africa’s borders. In 1972, Somali women protested in solidarity with Angela Davis, an African American activist who was imprisoned in the United States at the time. Carrying signs declaring “Angela Is Innocent,” they demanded her release. Despite being thousands of miles away, Somalis were paying attention to African struggles elsewhere in the world and saw the fight against racism, colonialism, and imperialism as interconnected.

You are entitled to believe Ghana deserves a place on that list. But suggesting that Somalia should be removed to make room for Ghana shows a dismissive attitude toward the history of an African country that contributed greatly to the continent and, at many points in its history, stood for something that all Africans should be proud of.
