A young Australian driver has avoided prison after fatally striking Pakistani international student Samia Malik in Adelaide.

CCTV footage showed Malik kneeling in the middle of the road for 4 minutes before the collision, with her hands appearing to be in a praying position.

The driver, Ashton Friend, 20, claimed he did not see Malik and initially believed he had struck an animal. He didn’t stop at the scene and was identified by police about a week later. The court heard he was neither speeding nor under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

He pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident. Friend received a prison sentence of 16 months, but the sentence was suspended on a two-year good behaviour bond, allowing him to avoid prison unless the suspension is revoked.

He also received a 10-year driving ban
