Free Black children were kidnapped off the streets of Northern cities and sold into Southern slavery by organized gangs, for decades. Historians estimate the victims in the thousands.
They called it the Reverse Underground Railroad.
Gangs like the Cannon-Johnson ring lured free Black boys from the Philadelphia docks with the promise of a day's work, chained them in cellars and ships, and marched them south to be sold. Children who had been born free woke up as property, hundreds of miles from parents who would search for them for the rest of their lives.
Solomon Northup's twelve years was the famous case. It was not the exceptional one.
