As we commemorate Srebrenica this week, we remember the 8372 men & boys murdered. 8372 men & boys who had lives ahead of them & loved ones surrounding them. 8372 is not just a number but 8372 individuals whose lives were cruelly ended in the name of hatred. We remember them.

We walked for each of those 8,372+ slain in Srebrenica in 1995, so that we never forget what the consequences look like when no one steps in to intervene.

This year we participated in a walk to remember the Srebrenica genocide in Chicago, planned & organized by Bosnian & Herzegovinian Genocide Foundation. 1000+ people, many of whom were genocide & concentration camp survivors, attended & participated.

We cannot do that without recognizing the devastating effects of mass imprisonment & enslavement of the Uyghurs, the destructive invasion of Ukraine, the state-sponsored violence in Syria, the genocide of the Tigray in Ethopia, Sudan & Palestine.

Turobni drumovi nas gone:
Izgnane, Zaboravljene i Odbačene.
Sile zla nas okružiše;
I posljednja oaza odumire.
Opasne predjele prekoračismo:
Otpadnici Novog Svijeta.
Dušman gazi i pali;
Licemjeri kao da slaviše.
I nema kisika sem baruta.
Nema drveta sem olova.
I nema zemlje sem humova.
Izgnanici, Otpadnici i Zaboravljeni!
I on plahko diže ruke…
Izgnan od dušmana.
Progonjen zbog Islama.
Zaboravljen od razuma.
Ko zasluži ovu patnju?
Da li on ima oči…
Zaboravljeni, Izgnani i Mrtvi.
Okaljan zaraznim bolestima.
Osakaćen nametnutom Mržnjom.
I gladan i žedan i beskućnik.
Ovi dušmani nemaju premca;
Sporazumješe se sa đavolom.
Da li on ima oči,
Da nas spase, da nam priskoče.
Nismo bili dio Zapada;
Nit zatvoreni iza Zavjesa.
Zar je krivica ovih patnika
Da mirno gledate naše humke.
Bosi trčimo po snježnim gorama.
Glad steže više od čelika.
Prognanici Novih vremena;
Zaboravljeni od bogatuna.
Tešku kletvu neko nam uruči;
Živih ima još, da joj svjedoči.
Pregaženi drumovi i ogoljena brda;
Sad je stjecište prevarene sirotinje.
Gomile sklupčane po blatnjavim cestama.
Plač djeteta guši odjek granata.
Ognjišta siromašna, glave izbezumljene.
Ponovo progonjen;
Opet izgnan i sad zaboravljen.
Krvavo bit će – poručuju silnici
Pa zar ima nešto još gore?
