The conversation around media can no longer end at headlines, cameras, and breaking news.
With today's technological advancements, it must also include AI, data ethics, digital safety, and the responsibility that comes with shaping public narratives in an increasingly connected world.
ICON Data and Learning Labs (IDL) joined media practitioners and storytellers in Kisumu for an insightful engagement hosted by the @MediaCouncilK, reflecting on the rapidly evolving media landscape and the growing need for ethical, people-centered innovation.
As technology continues to redefine how information is created, distributed, and consumed, the real question becomes: are we building a digital future that informs and protects people equally?
These are the conversations that will shape the future of media, data governance, and public trust.

You’ve seen the comments. The likes. The consequences.
Tonight, we talk about it.
How do the things we like, share, or ignore contribute to online violence against women?
And what does it really mean for men to move from bystanders to allies?
Because silence is also a choice.

The data we collect in community work tells real stories, it reflects lives, trust, and the impact of our programs. But are we protecting it well enough?
Responsible data management is at the heart of effective community work. Safeguarding sensitive information and building trust isn’t optional, it’s essential.
NGOs, CBOs, and community-focused organizations: join the movement to make data protection standard practice, not an afterthought.

Who is missing from the story?
When people aren’t counted in data, they’re left out of decisions that shape their lives.
For persons with disabilities, missing data = missed opportunities, support, and inclusion.
This #WorldDownSyndromeDay, we’re advocating for data that counts everyone.

Did you know you have rights over your personal data? If your answer is no, worry not, you’re not alone.
These protections are called Data Subject Rights, and they are guaranteed under the Kenya Data Protection Act 2019, which gives individuals control over how their personal information is collected, used, and shared.
During the #InternationalWomensDay activities in Kisumu, VINCENT OKOTH from the Data Advocacy Office at ICON Data and Learning Labs (IDL) unpacked these rights and why they matter in our everyday digital lives. The conversation also explored the growing reality of Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV), how harm is increasingly happening in digital spaces and what individuals can do to stay safe online.
Equally important, participants were guided through available reporting channels and support structures, because too often survivors don’t know where to turn when digital harm occurs.
Understanding our data rights is not just about policy, it’s about empowerment, safety, and accountability in the digital age.

Innovation without safety isn’t progress. From data protection to AI accountability, the choices we make today will shape how communities experience the internet tomorrow. Let’s build tech that protects, empowers, and includes.

We marked #WorldDataPrivacyDay 2026 at our HQ in Kisumu with a data privacy training, graced by Ruth from the @ODPC_KE, Western Region. The session reinforced that data protection goes beyond compliance, it builds trust and accountability. Stay alert. Protect your data. 🔐
In everything I have done for my family, this is my proudest moment.
School fees paid, shopping done for little bro.
Working towards giving him the best life I can afford. No going home for school fees like I did, first to put on toughees😊
The best is yet to come
