There is massive racism against Iranians and Middle Eastern people in general. This led the US/Israel to critically underestimate the resilience and seriousness of Iranian institutions.
It's also true however that people attempting to insulate the Islamic Republic from criticism for its abuses against women, Bahai, and so forth use anti-Orientalist/"decolonial" discourses as a convenient rhetorical device.
The world is complicated.
In terms of Marjane Satrapi, I cannot speak to her work because I haven't read it. The idea however that cartoons of her getting harassed by morality police women when she was 12 or whatever are "racist" is ludicrous.
If people want to dunk on Satrapi’s politics, go for it. She was wrong on Palestine and fell into Islamophobic politics.
But here’s the thing: you can criticize her without pretending that the IRI is some kind of wonderful place.
