Congratulations to Beth, one of Boulby’s Lab Laboratory Technician Apprentices, who was just awarded the Outreach Award at the @STFC_Matters Apprentice Awards evening! 🥳🎉
We wouldn’t be able to operate our deep underground #cleanrooms if it weren’t for the people who make it possible – Maria, our Soft Services Manager, being one of them!
Check out this article from Mitie in which Maria talks about maintaining cleanrooms 1.1km underground! 👇👀
Going underground (again). On Tuesday we were delighted to host members of the @UKRI_News Board at @STFC_Matters@BoulbyLab in the North East of England. Discussed the search for Dark Matter and the wide range of multi-disciplinary science opportunities at 1.1 km underground.
Getting FOMO for our Dark Matter Day live link? 😥
Well worry no more! You can catch the whole lab tour, plus the Dark Matter Mask crafting session and QnA, on our YouTube channel... 🎥📺

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting a visit from @IFLScience - a popular internet publication covering nature, science, technology, and more 🧪🪐
We’ll be sharing any content that gets published, so keep an eye out for some familiar faces from the Boulby team! 👀
Going 1.1km underground: great to host John Sarrao, director of the SLAC Linear Accelerator Centre, at @STFC_Matters@BoulbyLab in North Yorkshire. We saw the impressive progress with excavation of a space for a very large new facility. Talked about Dark Matter and much more...
For the past few weeks, Jonny has been polling the team through a series of fun, fridge-mounted surveys... 🥪📋
In the lead up to #Halloween, the team was asked, “What is the scariest thing that you can think of?” 🎃👻
Here’s what everyone had to say ⬇️💭
Since 2015, BGS & @BoulbyLab have been researching underground hydrogen & compressed air energy storage in halite (rock salt).
Many gasses could be stored in man-made caverns underground for long duration energy storage allowing us to balance our renewable energy system.
We’re incredibly excited to be on the shortlist for hosting a next-generation #DarkMatter detector at Boulby, and we’re proud to be part of the UK’s plans for world-leading #science over the next decade 🪐👷
Read more about #XLZD in the UKRI press release, linked below ⬇️
On October 31st, @BoulbyLab is hosting an exciting family-friendly #DarkMatterDay event! Meet the team and lean how they are searching for dark matter and take part in a fun Halloween activity.

Today’s special #WorldSpaceWeek –themed #PhotoOfTheWeek 📸 comes from last year’s MINAR! 🚀
What you’re looking at is a high-vis dress – part of an art installation by science artist Helen Schell, investigating what clothes might look like for an inhabitant of #Mars... 🪐
What do you think our lab’s director, Sean, is explaining here? 🤔💭
Suggestions welcomed in the comments... 👀
This week’s #PhotoOfTheWeek 📸 comes from a recent visit to our lab, following the #EarthSciences workshop that we hosted in York 🌍

#ThrowbackThursday to last year's MINAR, when we were visited by @OfficialUoM's CRADLE group... 🤖⚙️
The team were testing #robotics destined for use in extreme environments - putting them through their paces in the hot, dusty, dark tunnels around our lab! 🔦🪨

Here’s a riddle for you... 🔎🤔
I’ve been around forever
I’m tricky to find
I make up 85% of matter
But invisible to the eye
What am I?
